Starting Guide to Pen-spinning mods:
===========================================================

  • The one thing to know is that there is no pen which is better than another purely based on statistics and opinion.
  • Each person eventually will find a pen which will suit them individually.

-----------------------------

Now with that out of the way, the first you need to ask yourself is...

(1) What tricks are you trying to learn?

- Fundamentals?(goto 2A)
  • Thumb around
  • Charge
  • Sonic
  • Fingerpass

- Advanced? (goto 2B)
  • Twisted sonic
  • (reverse fundamentals)
  • Arounds
  • etc.

-----------------------------
(2A)

When your first learning tricks the common misconception is that you NEED a modded pen to advance. It's all a matter of weighing in what your personal preference is.

What also needs to be known is that most new-comers to pen-spinning make a common mistake. They think the heavier the better. Not True. A heavy pen certainly seems appetizing at first, but it really is not the right way to start.

When starting to learn tricks the fingers need to be taught how to move first. Heavier pens generally involve less force to move (momentum-wise), thus giving the fingers less movement intially. Also something to be known, a heavier pen at first can strain the fingers making it difficult to practice. That's why when learning your first tricks a lighter pen is generally needed.

A light pen allows the fingers to learn the initial movements to the fullest extent without straining the fingers too much. This is not to say heavy pens are bad; simply lighter pens should be used to get the fundamental tricks down.

The most common first mods that should be used are as follows

  • Pencil (self explanitory)
  • Bictory
  • RSVP MX
  • Comssa or Metallic Comssa

Now the preference is up to you entirely. Here is a simple pros/cons list:

-----------------------------

Each one of these pens has its own unique features, but the preference is
entirely up to you. That'll be up to you to decide.

Some more of the advanced spinners end up using these pens exclusively
purely based on their personal comfort. They are just as good as any other
mod.

-----------------------------

(2B)

Now, Once you've gotten down the fundamentals you may ask yourself if there's a better pen I should be using. It's all personal preference, the thing to keep in mind, is that the pen is only as good as the spinner. Many people choose to simply stick with lighter mods if they're comfortable with them. There is no obligation to move to a heavier pen, it is ALL PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

As I had mentioned earlier there are tons of different mods to choose from, including heavier pens. The lighter pens can be used for these tricks, but most new-comers will complain about a lack of momentum. This is where the heavier pens tend to come in handy. Once the fundamental tricks are trained
into the fingers the other movements should come a bit easier.

For those who wish to move onto a heavier pen a word of warning. Moving to a heavy pen too quickly can make spinning any other pen difficult. (not always,
but it's quite common.)

The most commonly heavy pens are as follows

  • Dr. KT
  • Grip/Tip Stacking based G3 mods and Comssas
  • BusterCYL
